Sacramento Moves Closer to Commercial Robotaxi Service

A leading autonomous vehicle company has received approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to expand its passenger operations into the Sacramento region, moving the state capital closer to commercial robotaxi service. The company had already received authorization to test autonomous vehicles in Sacramento and began operating vehicles in autonomous mode with specialists behind the wheel earlier this summer. California divides oversight between the Department of Motor Vehicles, which regulates autonomous vehicle testing and deployment, and the CPUC, which oversees passenger service. Sacramento itself does not have permitting or regulatory authority over autonomous vehicle providers. The expansion is another sign that robotaxi deployment is moving beyond California’s largest coastal cities and into additional metropolitan markets.

Nashville Debate Highlights State vs. Local AV Authority

As fully autonomous vehicles begin carrying passengers in Nashville, questions are emerging over how much authority local governments have to regulate their operations. Metro Nashville Police can cite autonomous vehicles for traffic violations, but Tennessee law gives the state primary regulatory authority over the technology. The issue recently surfaced when Nashville’s Traffic and Parking Commission sought to discuss autonomous vehicle operations and invite a company representative to appear before the commission. Metro attorneys advised that state law preempts the city from regulating autonomous vehicles, preventing the commission from moving forward. The dispute highlights a policy question likely to become more common as robotaxis expand nationwide: whether statewide regulatory frameworks should remain dominant or cities should have greater authority over autonomous vehicles operating on their streets.

Japanese Autonomous Driving Startup Eyes US Expansion

Japanese autonomous driving startup Turing is planning to establish a US office as it looks to expand its technology internationally and potentially pursue an initial public offering valued at approximately $10 billion. The Tokyo-based company develops autonomous driving software for both passenger vehicles and robotaxis and plans to open its US operation within the next year. The office will initially focus on collecting driving data and conducting research and development as the company works toward mass production of its driver-assistance technology by 2030. Turing is also working with established Japanese automotive companies, including Subaru and Denso, which could provide additional pathways into international markets. The expansion highlights the increasingly global competition to develop autonomous driving software and establish a presence in the US market.

Driverless Race Cars Push Autonomous Technology to Its Limits

Researchers funded by the US National Science Foundation are using high-speed driverless race cars to test autonomous vehicle technology under extreme conditions. University teams participating in the Indy Autonomous Challenge compete using identical race cars, meaning the primary difference between vehicles is the software controlling them. At speeds exceeding 170 mph, autonomous systems must rapidly respond to other vehicles, unexpected obstacles, changing track conditions and even sensor failures. Researchers say these demanding environments provide opportunities to stress-test software in ways that would be difficult or unsafe on public roads. The research is intended to improve both fully autonomous vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems, with participating teams sharing data to accelerate development across the field.

Ride-Hailing Partnership Plans 2,000 Robotaxis Across Europe

A leading global ride-hailing platform and Chinese autonomous driving company Pony.ai are expanding their partnership with plans to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis across Europe. The collaboration already operates a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia, and is expected to expand into four additional European cities. The companies also plan to extend their partnership into the Middle East, although additional markets and deployment timelines have not yet been announced. The agreement illustrates how ride-hailing platforms are increasingly partnering with autonomous vehicle developers rather than developing their own self-driving technology. It also represents a significant international expansion for Chinese autonomous driving technology as competition for the global robotaxi market intensifies.
